Beer Tasting at the Silk Mercer, Devizes - Wednesday 3rd April 2013

Around twenty CAMRA members and guests tasted a range of beers from the Box Steam Brewery at Wetherspoon's Silk Mercer in Devizes on Wednesday. Available at the bar was the Box flagship beer, 'Tunnel Vision', a well rounded, light amber, traditional bitter at 4.2%, and 'Broad Gauge', a full bodied ruby bitter with a fruity aroma at 4.8%. These two were supplemented by 'Funnel Blower', a dark brown beer with lovely vanilla notes, roasted barley bitterness and chocolate malts at 4.5%, and the seasonal, and just available, 'Half Sovereign', a lovely copper coloured ale, full flavoured, with a hoppy aroma and a soft malt finish at 3.5%. Funnel Blower and Half Sovereign were both brought fresh from the brewery on the day, whilst Tunnel Vision and Broad Gauge were already on tap.

All of the beers were sampled and appreciated, with comments flowing through the evening such as, for Funnel Blower, 'this is a real marmite beer, love it or hate it, I love it', for Half Sovereign, 'a lovely beer, surprisingly tasty for a light ale', for Broad Gauge, 'this one I really like and thanks for making it a regular rather than just a seasonal', and finally for Tunnel Vision, 'nice . . .'.
