Various proposals were made in the early 1800s to link the centres of London and Bristol. All failed, until an ambitious scheme led by a group of Bristol Merchant Venturers, and inspired by the emerging engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, was given the green light on 31st August 1835. It was full steam ahead for the Great Western Railway.
