If you come into the world christened Isambard Kingdom Brunel, you are hardly invited to live your life as a shrinking violet.
Here was a man of great daring and adventure who lived up to his name. His broad gauge railway improved comfort and made mile a minute speeds commonplace, at a time when 30 mph was considered good going. But the narrow-minded Gauge Commission rejected it for the more widely used standard gauge.
It leaves a bitter taste.
