The Box Tunnel remains a monument both to the ingenuity of Isambard Kingdom Brunel and to the scores of navvies who perished during its construction. As today’s express train passengers are plunged into darkness, is that the moan of a hundred longburied men they hear above the engine’s roar, or simply a rush of wind in the tunnel? Either way, it’s our contention that a sip of this full-bodied, ruby bitter is just the ticket to soothe the nerves.
